A helpful parent

You know the situation. Good, musical student (about 10 years old) – parental involvement (both musicians) – everything should be progressing well, but you still end up saying the same things over and over and over again. Problem: a lack of focus in the practicing. The result is growing frustration on the part of the parents and the teacher.  The stakes are rising – there’s an exam next week.

Finally, father comes up with a great idea. He sits the child down and makes her go through every piece and write down instructions to herself. There’s something about the act of writing it down (as opposed to reading my nicely typed assignment sheets) that reinforces those specifics and make them stick.

End result: incredible improvement in 4 days – or, rather, finally reaching the point we should have reached 2 months ago. A sigh of relief – the exam should go well after all.
